WHAT!!! Do NOT give your 5 month old child soda!!!!!! Do not take them off formula. I cant believe that you were told to you. Breastmilk is best but if you HAVE to you can use formula .They need NOTHING else until 6 months of age. If breastfed they dont need anything until even later.

Remedies for Baby's Discomfort
by: Grandma

Hello,

First I want to advice you to calm down, you are going to go through this more times than you want to know right now.

When my children started coming down with chest congestion the first thing I'd do is get the vaporizer out. If you don't have one, get one, you'll use it many many times. So at least put a pot of cold tap water on the stove with a pinch of salt and bring to a boil and let the steam fill your home. Just make sure you keep an eye on the pot that it don't burn dry. This will help loosen the phelm up in your baby's chest. I'd also take the baby off of the formula right now, for at least a couple of days. Instead give your baby some 7UP, get a 2 liter of 7Up and open it and let it go flat, keep at room temperature and give it to your baby as much as he wants to drink. You can also smash up a banana until it gets like liquid and give a tiny amount at a time. This will help with the vomiting and also stop the phelm from producing.

There are also several medicinal teas that are really good for babies, like fennel, chamomile, lemon balm, you can find the recipes for these teas on my website, just look under "Medicinal Teas".

You can also take the juice of a fresh lemon and put about a tablespoon of honey in a pan and bring to a boil, let it cool to room temperature and give to your baby about a 1/4 teaspoon at a time. Make sure you don't use raw honey, your baby is too young to digest it. This mixture will help soothe the throat and relieve the cough.
