I have had tinnitus for years and have no idea what caused it. Had a thyroidectomy more than 10 yrs ago but am not sure if that is at all related. The ENT doc who did my surgery doesn't really have any medical advice about it.

Tinnitus Causes & Remedies by: Grandma
I really don't know much about Tinnitus..simply because nobody in my family has ever experienced this ear disorder. I did a little research and found there are many causes, mostly working around loud noises, stress, and vitamin deficiency. Most likely a past ear infection could cause this too.
As far as remedies, I didn't find much except rest, relaxing and get away from loud noises. Since I have no idea what caused your tinnitus it's pretty hard to even guess at what a good remedy would be. I can tell you if someone in my family would suddenly complain of this I'd start putting my glycerine remedy in their ear. Anytime any of my children or myself would start experiencing an earache the first thing I'd reach for is the glycerine bottle. I've never seen a time it didn't work. I just take a Q-tip and hold it under hot water to get it moist then dip in several times into the glycerine bottle and get it good and drippy, hold it in opening to the ear and just let it drip down, I'll do this several times then have them lay down and let it just slide down into the ear. The next day I'd take another Q-tip and get the wax or drainage out of the ear. I think it's well worth a try, especially if a past ear infection or build up wax may be causing your problem.

PS I did notice a few books written on the subject on the internet, if the glycerine don't help I'd suggest you do a little research and invest in a book on the subject of home remedies for tinnitus.
