Eye Infection in Cats

Hi, I was at work the other day and I found a kitten that's no more than 4 or 5 days old and its eyes are swollen and have puss coming out of them, I got one of them open and it keeps getting stuck closed again because of all of the puss. The other eye is even worse I pat it with a warm cloth and the puss starts poring out. What can I do for this the vet isn't open and I want to help him as much as i can until they do open?

Kittens Eye Infection
by: Grandma

Hi Connie,

I'm wondering how your kitten is doing. I don't think you have to worry about damage to the eyes, that's pretty common in kittens. Did you get to the vet? I'm sure what the poor things needs now is tender loving care and I can tell by your concern you're going to give him lots of that.

thank you very much i just really hope the infection hasnt hurt his eyes because he is very young. his eyes had ALOT of crust over them when i found him so it must have been that way since he was born or soon after... could it do permanent damage? I have an appointment at the vet in the morning

Cats & Eye Infections
by: Grandma

Hi Connie,

What a kind soul you are to rescue the tiny kitten. I had the same thing happen several months ago but we rescued 6 kittens and they all had eye infections.

I used sea salt and warm water to gently clean their eyes out with. The warm salt water will naturally clean the puss out without the worry of injuring the eyes. Take about a cup of warm water and add about 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt. Just take a soft cloth and dip it into the warm salt water and run it across its closed eyes. Once the eyes start to open keep doing this a couple of times a day and before you know it the eye infection will be gone.
