Baby Constantly Spitting Up

My 6 month old grandson has been perfectly healthy until about 2 weeks ago when he started getting diarrhea. We got the diarrhea under control and now, he's spitting up.

We have tried soy formulas, sensitive formulas and even the formulas for spitting up. I would rather not take him to the doctor just to do the same experiments that we have already done. Any suggestions?

Concerned Grandma
by: Grandma

Hello Beverley,

Needless to say, I have a soft spot for a concerned Grandma.

What you are telling me reminds me of when my second son was 6 weeks old. He had diarrhea so bad that I was scared to death he may have to go into the hospital. His doctor was one of those old country doctors and I just loved him.

The problem was he had an allergy to dairy and his formula was the worst thing I could give him. Of course at that time (over 40 years ago) they had no other option as far as formula was concerned. So his doctor put him on mashed bananas and 7UP. I know that sounds drastic, it did to me for a 6 week old baby but I tried it. It worked great, the only problem was, whenever I took him off the bananas and 7UP and back on formula the diarrhea would come back. So for the first 4 months that was his formula, except for a little rice cereal after he was 3 months old. Believe it or not, he was the healthiest kid I had. To this day he rarely gets sick and he can eat anything, except milk.

So my suggestion to you would be to try the mashed banana and 7UP formula for a few days and see how your grandson does. Just make sure you mash the ripe banana until it's almost liquid and also get a 2 liter of 7UP and loosen the cap and let it sit at room temperature until it's flat. This way you can put it in his bottle without the nipple blowing up, plus you don't want all those bubbles in his belly. After a few days try giving him some rice cereal with the soy formula mixed in, just a little to see how his belly tolorates it. If it seems OK just keep increasing the formula each day until he's handling it OK. If not, you can always go back to the banana and 7UP.
